As student numbers across Dutch higher professional education (HBO) continue to decline, Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) is bucking the trend. While the overall pool of logistics students is shrinking, BUas's Logistics Management & Engineering programmes are holding steady in absolute numbers, meaning the university is quietly growing its share of the market.

Rather than resting on that relative success, the programmes team is pressing forward. With the Vitalogs project winding down in the 2026–2027 academic year, BUas is rolling out three significant curriculum updates designed to keep graduates ahead of a rapidly evolving industry.

Data Science and AI embedded in Logistics Engineering

The first update brings artificial intelligence into the core of the Logistics Engineering programme. Previously an optional pathway, the Applied Data Science and AI specialisation has now been fully embedded into the main track. Students will follow two dedicated modules in the second year, ensuring that data literacy and AI competency are no longer extras, they are essentials.

A new focus on Project and Event Logistics

The second update introduces a brand-new specialisation within Logistics Management: Project and Event Logistics. Available from the second year, this track responds to growing demand for professionals who can manage the complex supply chains behind large-scale events, from international festivals to military operations and humanitarian aid missions. The specialisation takes a human-centred approach, placing students in project-based learning environments as they explore areas including heavy lifting and crisis logistics.

Taking off: Airlines and Airport Management

The third addition is perhaps the most ambitious. Transformative Airlines & Airport Management is a full two-year track that bridges aviation, logistics, facility management, and tourism. Designed for students with an eye on a career in the aviation industry, the programme draws on BUas's established strengths across multiple disciplines and can be entered from the second year of study.

Industry-connected education

Across all three pathways, BUas emphasises its commitment to what it calls meaningful, industry-connected education, learning experiences grounded in applied research and shaped by the realities of professional practice. The goal, in the words of the programme team, is straightforward: to equip students for the world of tomorrow.
